The Brief:

The brief was to create a characterful and comfortable bedroom with the addition of a new en-suite, making better use of the generous space available within the existing room.

The design needed to incorporate practical storage and the new bathroom without compromising the feeling of space, while creating a scheme that felt colourful, individual and cohesive throughout.

The Design:

The scheme was built around Emma J Shipley’s Lost World wallpaper in blue, which provided the starting point for the room’s rich colour palette. Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue was used on the walls, while white painted panelling was added behind the bed to create a strong focal point and provide contrast against the deeper blue.

Fitted wardrobes were built in to provide generous storage, while a fireplace sourced through eBay added character to the room. Bespoke bedside lampshades were made to coordinate with the Lost World wallpaper, helping to carry the pattern through the scheme.

Accents of orange and yellow were introduced through cushions and accessories, providing warmth against the blue backdrop, while a yellow sofa creates another bold injection of colour.

Space within the existing bedroom was used to create a new en-suite. To visually connect the two areas, the Lost World wallpaper was repeated on the wall behind the basin, with Farrow & Ball’s Kittiwake used on the remaining walls. Floor tiles from Your Tiles complete the scheme, with William Morris Brer Rabbit towels from Marks & Spencer adding another subtle layer of pattern.

The Result:

A colourful and individual bedroom suite that combines character with practicality. The new en-suite and fitted storage make much better use of the available space, while repeating colour and pattern across both areas creates a sense of continuity between the bedroom and bathroom.

The combination of deep blues, warm yellow and orange accents, pattern and characterful pieces gives the finished space a distinctive identity without the bedroom and en-suite feeling like two separate schemes.
